Men Kill Their Weak ...
Women Kill Their Strong

This session's title is a direct quote from a woman participating in a year-long leadership program for women. Many women nodded their heads in agreement when this provocative statement was made. The impact of this statement and the reactions of the other women hit me hard, and I committed myself to learning more about why this might be true. I discovered something called misogyny. Webster describes misogyny as "having or showing hatred or distrust of women." I went on to learn that most often we think about this word in terms of men displaying misogynistic behaviors towards women. I was more interested in learning about why women often display misogynistic behaviors towards other women. I've come to learn that misogyny is both ancient and current, pervasive, largely unconscious, and institutionalized. I even learned that we can internalize misogyny - colluding in our own marginalization! Please join me for a learning experience of information sharing, an exercise, and self-discovery regarding this deeply buried cultural behavior.

Key Learning Points:

  • Increasing awareness of issues affecting women in groups and organizations.

  • Learning how I am contributing to my own as well as other women's marginalization.

  • Increasing your ability to build more powerful relationships with other women in your personal and professional lives.
