Initial Interview
Initial coaching conversations are critical for establishing rapport and identifying goals.
Different coaches will use their own unique tools and processes for their initial interviews, however the questionnaire provided here will give you an idea of the kind of information a coach may request early on.
Sample Initial Interview Questionnaire
How would you describe yourself professionally?
Generally speaking, what principles guide your life choices and decisions?
What do you consider your strengths?
What do you consider your areas for improvement?
What keeps you awake at night?
Do you have a recent performance appraisal or 360° assessment feedback that you can send me?
What are your career goals?
Who do you interact with most in your day-to-day responsibilities?
What are your coaching or learning goals – things you want to achieve as a result of this coaching relationship?
Have you ever completed a Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) instrument? If yes, what is your type? If no, would you be willing to complete one?
What is your preferred method of communication, i.e., email, telephone, face-to-face?
Is there anything you want to know about me?
Is there anything else you think would be important for me to know right now?
Would you like to go ahead and set up our next meeting?
